Five Worthing Facts

Smugglers by the sea

Worthing may seem like a peaceful seaside town today, but back in the 1800s, it was a hotbed of smuggling. The George Inn (now replaced by the Guildbourne Centre) was rumoured to have a tunnel running straight to the sea – perfect for sneaking in contraband under the noses of the authorities. From brandy to silk, if it could be smuggled, chances are it passed through Worthing!

Literary legends

Worthing has some serious literary credentials. Oscar Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Earnest here in the summer of 1894, and Jane Austen’s unfinished novel Sanditon was inspired by her stay in the town. Fast-forward to the 1960s, and playwright Harold Pinter penned The Homecoming from his home in Ambrose Place. Not bad for one quiet coastal town.

Lights, Camera, Worthing

Worthing has played host to plenty of film and TV cameras over the years. From classics like Wish You Were Here to sitcoms like Men Behaving Badly, the town’s made plenty of on-screen appearances. Worthing Pier even became a bit of an indie icon in the ‘90s, gracing the album cover of Britpop band Gene’s ‘To See the Lights’.

A sunset worth travelling for

Believe it or not, Worthing’s been named one of the top 25 places in the world to watch the sunset – beating the likes of Miami and Hawaii. The CrabShack on Marine Parade is the perfect spot to watch the sky turn pink over the sea, glass of wine in hand. Who needs the tropics when you’ve got this on your doorstep?

Hidden reef just offshore

Just a few miles off the coast, ‘Worthing Lumps’ is an incredible underwater chalk reef that’s been called one of the best in Europe. It’s home to all sorts of marine life and has cliff faces up to three metres high – all beneath the waves. It’s a diver’s dream, and many locals don’t even know it’s there.

Local Flavours

Coast Cafe

Right on the seafront, Coast Café has that effortless beachside vibe down to a tee. It’s the perfect spot for a long brunch, a post-swim coffee, or sunset drinks with friends. With a heated terrace, live music, and fresh, local ingredients at the heart of their menu, it’s where good food and great views go hand in hand.
